Mingo Lewis Jr.
Percussion
Mingo Lewis Jr. is a magically gifted percussionist whose musical roots run deep and wide. As a third-generation musician born and raised in the vibrant cultural melting pot of the Bay Area, Mingo’s path has always been steeped in rhythm, heritage, and soulful expression. With a life shaped by music from an early age, it was only natural that he would evolve into one of the most dynamic and in-demand musicians of his generation.
Mingo’s career reflects both range and resonance. He has performed, toured, or recorded with influential acts such as Groundation, the reggae legend Fiji, and the spiritually conscious artist Mike Love. His adaptability across genres and cultures has taken him to over 30 countries and 40 U.S. states, bringing rhythm and energy to stages of every size and style.
Known for blending traditional percussive techniques with an almost otherworldly musical intuition, Mingo’s playing often feels touched by something beyond the ordinary—an innate magic that turns every beat into a story. Whether he’s driving a reggae groove, electrifying a funk break, or lifting spirits in a gospel service, Mingo’s presence is unmistakable.
Currently, Mingo brings his rhythmic wizardry to a wide array of musical projects. He performs regularly with bands such as Sol Horizon, Vinyl, Spike Sikes and His Awesome Hot Cakes, Starman SF, The Justin Garns Band, Rising Tide, Erica Ambrin, and the eclectic tribute ensemble The Space Orchestra, which honors the legacy of Joe Cocker. He also lends his talents to the soulful vibes of Jethro Jeremiah, the party-stirring Weekend at Bernie’s, and the powerful worship services of The Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, among others.
Mingo Lewis Jr. doesn’t just play percussion—he channels it. Whether on a world tour or a hometown stage, he crafts moments that move bodies and stir hearts. With every strike of the drum and shake of the tambourine, he continues a family tradition while carving out a legacy that is uniquely, and unmistakably, his own. Starman SF is incredibly fortunate to have such an amazingly talented percussionist bringing rhythm, energy, and brilliance to every performance.
